What's on my Kindle now..
Are you looking for something new to read. Well don't pick this one up. Really don't!
I hate putting it down.
There are a ton of reviews for Karen Essex, but they are so mixed. This seems to be a love it or hate it kind of book, as many of hers are. Well, I figured I'd take a chance so I downloaded Kleopatra
thinking why not, I'm out of stuff to read and I'm on a brake from school. Well it was so good. Gives a whole new spin on Kleopatra (yes the title has it spelled with a K) How good was it you ask? Well it made me worship my kindle all over again.
I was at the end of the book, it's 9 at night and I realize WHAT! That's it! Flip the page, and read "Watch for part II"
I ran to my computer to down load Pharaoh (Kleopatra, Volume II)
so I could finish.
So lets give you the low down, with out giving any spoilers.
What's good about the book?
- I've never been a person who wanted to go to the dessert ( hot, dry, yucky NO THANKS give me the ocean) But Karen Essex paints such a beautiful picture of what Egypt was like that it made me consider wanting to see it for myself.
- The language was beautiful. If you are looking for a book that doesn't repeat "spot did this" and expand your vocabulary a bit this is a great book to do it. The irony in the speech of the speakers is so slight you have to pay attention to get it. I love the word play.
- The history. Yes this is a fictional book. However if you think of it the way you might a historic romance novel, you'll love the book. Some of the historical references are true, as are the events, but other than that this is a fictional book. If you keep that in mind it's a very enjoyable book
- So many charters. It let you see the story unfold from several angles while still keeping the focus on Kleopatra.
What's the down falls of the book.
- Not gonna lie, the names. You know all the Greek, Roman, and Egyptian Gods and the proper ways to pronounce them right.... yeah me either.
- slow. It was slow to start. Doesn't pick up for a bit. It was interesting enough to keep me reading but did not "Grab me" until I was more than half way into the book.
- lots of random sex scenes. I felt they were random anyway. Perhaps she was just trying to get the point across that sex was not such a big deal in that time period, but to me they seemed a bit much. The story would have been fine with out them.
All in all the first book Kelopatra would get 4 out of 5 pumpkin lattes. ( Can lattes be used as a scoring system?)
As for the second book, I'll let you know, but there is no way you are going to read the first book and not grab the second!
